Funny Onion ‘news’ piece about the Internet crashing, but completely unbelievable when it turns out that it was a guy doing all the multi-tasking that caused the crash. Only women multi-task that effectively.
While trying to figure out how much bother I should go to to see “Comedy of Errors” at Shakespeare at Winedale (it’s one of three, and there are two a day), I came across this little gem: Godwin’s Law. I cracked up, but I can’t guarantee you will. It could be that it’s funnier if you’ve just been thinking about how “Scenic Highway” is about memory, if you have fond memories of Michael Godwin, if you’re Jewish and rather tired of the Holocaust….
Budget Travel says those darling little Smart cars from Europe are coming to the US next year. According to the company website, the Smart car road show doesn’t reach Austin until October, but I saw one in use the Arboretum on Sunday.
Consumer Reports tested one from Canada and didn’t like it. Rats. They sure are cute, but the review makes it sound about as appealing as a Geo Metro, which is the worst car I’ve ever driven. If it really drives that poorly and the closest current source is Canada, I should feel pity rather than envy towards the driver.
While I’m hardly suffering as much from it as people in Marble Falls or Tewkesbury, I’m just sick of all this rain. We haven’t had triple digits yet this summer, there’s algae growing on the masonry, allergies and insects are nightmarish, and free live music is rained out constantly.
On the way to b’fast this morning, Burnet Road was so flooded that a car was stalled and it was down to one lane each direction. Since I grew up in hurricane country, I knew how to drive through it (wait until all the other cars are all the way through so no one stalls in front of you, wait until the wakes are gone so you can judge the depth, and if you decide to go, drive at a slow and steady pace), but it was just beyond bizarre to have to do that in Austin–and not near a creek. When we emerged from the Om ready to meet the day and face our responsibilities, it was blindingly bright but still cool.
This is so far from normal for Austin in July. Maybe in August back when we used to have Aquafest, but not during July.
Shakespeare at Winedale this weekend: Now that’s something to look forward to! I hope the barn hasn’t washed away….
What has happened to Whole Foods? I can remember being a happy shopper when it was in the building that is currently a used record store on Lamar and at Burnet and 183; now it feels like an expensive ordeal at either local location. I’ve had employees lecture me about the evils of products that used to be available at Whole Foods, before it exalted itself. I have so many friends who shop at Sun Harvest regularly; I wish it was in my best interests for their stores to stay open.
And Mackey…. I can’t think of anything polite to say. Read the rest of this entry »
