Sorry to be brief, but I’m exhausted:
“Will Eisner”–good documentary about comics and graphic novels and Jews–Comics and graphic novel aren’t my thing, but this was quite good, especially the emphasis on how so many of the big names in the business were Jewish. It would make an excellent component of a Jewish film festival.
“Juno”–This charming story of a teen pregnancy and adoption simply didn’t feel true. I enjoyed it, but never suspended disbelief enough to really care one way or another. Sitcom-smart people just don’t sit well with me, I guess.
“Lars and the Real Girl“–opening soon nationwide–I walked in totally skeptical, and came out a huge fan. Where “Juno” never drew me in, “Lars” sucked me in completely. I’m amazed by how much I got into it and bought the characters, and I know I wasn’t the only one in the audience who felt that way. When the sister-in-law was so excited and we knew that she was about to be crushed and confused, there was a real sense that the audience was totally drawn into a story that was almost completely unbelievable, but still so true. Some fine acting, some lovely characters, seriously good writing. Totally recommended, even if you think it sounds bizarre or unsavory.
After that, it was animated shorts. Only two are worth mentioning: “I Met the Walrus” was great! “The Pearce Sisters” was gruesome but lovely.
BTW, I finally found out that “Chicago 10″ has limited release in February 2008. That’s so too far in the future! Nominations will be locked by then. Sad to miss the opportunity to change the debate….

A Will Eisner movie?! I love him. There’s a lot of his stuff in my room at the house if you suddenly feel interested.
